It seems a team dynasty is being born as the latest conquest for the uber-successful Saints varsity team wins in the finals against highly regarded Mt. Carmel high school to capture its second title in as many years. After running through its bracket undefeated against Westview, Hilltop and Orange Glen high schools, Saints found itself in familiar territory – facing a highly decorated opponent looking to score big against the state champs. Respectively, Mt. Carmel had also run the gamut through its own bracket having delivered dominant games against opponents scoring multiple goals in each game (6,4,3,3).

For this game, Saints fought hard and struck first with a goal scored in the first three minutes of the game by Garrett Blodgett (’14). That seemed to have taken the breath out of Mt. Carmel because this was a team not used to coming from behind. From there, Saints dominated field possession and made the most of their opportunities. And while Mt. Carmel landed its lone goal to make things interesting, Saints’ Johnny Costa quickly answered with its second goal of the game helping to seal the deal. After that, Saints’ superb defense and exceptional work by its keeper, Cody Russel (‘14) helped shut down the hopeful Mt. Carmel team for good leading to Saints’ tournament victory.
