2020 Saints Golf Team:
The Saints golf team has been a perpetual contender for the league championship and over the last 30 years has won more than 70% of their dual matches. Our golfers have won one State Championship (2005), one Southern California Championship, 2 CIF Championships, and have also been CIF runner-up 4 times. The Saints golf team has participated in the full field San Diego CIF Championship 32 out of the past 33 years heading into the 2020 season.
The upcoming season should show improvement as many players who will form the top eight on the team gained extensive match experience last year. Returning senior lettermen Diego Bremer and Anthony Konja, both two-time varsity letterman, senior letterman Andres Garza and sophomore letterman Jacob Paule figure to be the leaders of the team. The competition for varsity playing time figures to be earned by some combination of seniors Stuart Dempster, Daniel Gutierrez, Matt Jedlicka, Matt Steinberger and junior Nolan Steinbuch, though the beauty of golf is that any player who has worked on his game and can post the best scores once we get to team qualifying will be earning the coveted varsity playing time. Besides playing in 8 Western League matches, we will compete in another 13 nine-hole dual matches starting in February. A highlight of the season will be in March when Saints will serve as host for the 8th consecutive year of the “San Diego Country Club High School Invitational”. This event is held at one of the most prestigious venues in San Diego and features nine of the top high school teams in the county.
Keep your eyes out for the continued emergence and development of Jacob Paule. In his freshman year, Jacob earned All- Western League honors, won the prestigious City League Match Play tournament with an eagle on the 1st playoff hole in the Finals match, and also qualified for the famous IMG Junior World Tournament at Torrey Pines this past July; in doing so, Jacob became the first Saintsman to qualify for the event since Tyler Torano (Saints 2010, Loyola Marymount 2014).
OTHER NOTE: keep an eye on two Saintsmen who are still competing professionally in their attempts at qualifying for the PGA Tour. Besides Tyler Torano, Armando Favela (Saints 2005, Loyola, Chicago 2009, and recognized as the best golfer in the college’s history) continues in the quest for PGA Tour status. Armando was part of the Saints 2005 State Championship team, the first state championship in Saints athletic history! Good luck Tyler and Armando – keep up the hard work.
