Mr. Tom Isaak,
Head Golf Coach

2021 Saints Golf Team:

The Saints golf team has been a perpetual contender for the league championship and over the last 30 years has won more than 70% of their dual matches. Our team has won one State Championship (2005), one Southern California Championship, 2 CIF Championships, and have also been CIF runner-up 4 times. The Saints golf team has participated in the full field San Diego CIF Championship 32 out of the past 33 years heading into the 2021 season.

There is much excitement around getting back on the golf course following the 2020 season ending prematurely due to the virus. Saints was undefeated in Western League heading into big matches against Cathedral Catholic and La Jolla High last spring when the season ended.  Despite the loss of five of our top eight golfers from last year, we have expectations of a strong season due to strong play at the top of the lineup.  Junior Jacob Paule is still the defending San Diego City League Match Play champion and one of the top junior golfers in San Diego.  He will be pushed by incoming 9th grader Billy Davis, another top ranked San Diego junior golfer, forming what figures to be one of the best 1-2 punches in San Diego this season.   Juniors Bernardo Esparza and Carlo Franco are talented golfers who have improved their games and figure to be in the varsity matches throughout the season.  While there are many unknowns that will sort themselves out through qualifying and matches, we have a very large group of golfers who are eager to break into the top 8 players:  incoming 9th grader Santiago Garza hopes to pick up where his just-graduated brother Andres left off last spring and 10th graders Jeff Korn and Henry Hooper look to move up from solid JV seasons last year.  Other team members whose play may warrant varsity time are seniors Joseph Selfani and Nolan Steinbuch as well as juniors Tyler and Lucas Wahl.  The great thing about golf is that others on the roster have the skills and opportunity to work on their game and earn a varsity spot so everything said above is with the hopes that other players have worked on their games and are able to strengthen our team in 2021.

Besides playing in 8 Western League matches, we will compete in other non-league nine-hole dual matches once the Stay-At-Home order is lifted.  A highlight of the season will be on March 18th when Saints will serve as host for the 8th year of the “San Diego Country Club High School Invitational”. This event is held at one of the most prestigious venues in San Diego and features nine of the top high school teams in the county.

OTHER NOTE:  Keep an eye on two Saintsmen who are still competing professionally in their attempts at qualifying for the PGA Tour. Tyler Torano (Saints 2010, Loyola Marymount 2014) was a top NCAA golfer, earning spots in NCAA regionals on two occasions. Armando Favela (Saints 2005, Loyola, Chicago 2009, and recognized as the best golfer in the Loyola’s history) continues playing professionally.  Both players compete on professional mini-tours both in and outside of the United States as they continue their quest for PGA Tour status. Armando was part of the Saints 2005 State Championship team, the first state championship in Saints athletic history!  Good luck Tyler and Armando – keep up the hard work.
