For the past 30 years Saints Varsity Baseball has compiled over 600 wins. Those teams have won 17 league titles, 9 Lion’s Tournament Championships, 5 Bill Whittaker Classic Tournament Championships, 3 City Conference Tournament Championships, and have been to the C.I.F. Championship game 5 times. The tradition is rich in Saints Baseball and the program will continue to produce fundamentally sound baseball players who continue their playing career at the next level.
Head coach Craig da Luz has been at the helm of the program for the past 10 years. He began his coaching career following a playing career that started at St. Augustine and ended in the Detroit Tigers organization. His first season as a coach was at the High School level in 2002 with St.Augustine, as an assistant under then skipper, Coaching Hall of Fame member and 427 game winner, Mike Stephenson. da Luz would spend one season as an assistant coach at the University of San Diego under Torero Head Coach Rich Hill for the 2002-2003 collegiate season, capturing the WCC Championship and advancing to the Fullerton Regional. da Luz returned to Saints as a full-time staff member and an assistant coach for three more years, 2005-2008, before assuming the head coaching duties in 2009. Coach da Luz’s teams have averaged 20+ wins a season (2009-present: 201-124) and captured league titles in 2013, 2012, and 2011 and 2nd place finishes in 2018, 2015, 2014, 2010 and 2009. In 2014 Coach da Luz was selected as the Diamond Sports ABCA Regional Coach of the Year and a finalist for the National Coach of the Year. In 2015 The Saints reached the semi-finals of the CIF Open-Division losing 1-0 to La Costa Canyon. In 2016 the team started out hot winning 14 of 16 early to reach the county #1 ranking before hitting a mid-season skid that ended with an early playoff loss. In 2016, 2017, & 2018, the Saints Varsity team was awarded an ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award with team GPA’s of 3.85, 3.87, & 3.72 respectively. In 2017 the Saints entered the CIF Division 1 playoffs as the #1 seed, falling to eventual champ, Grossmont in the Semi-Final game. The 2018 season saw a bit of a rebuilding process where a combined 6 Freshmen and Sophomores garnered the bulk of the starting, playing, and pitching time. That experience should help pave the way for continued program success. As always we strive for a high rate of achievement in the classroom and on the field heading into the 2019 baseball season.
Every year the program goals are to play to the best of our ability, with very high expectations of self and team, play with class and dignity, win a league title and the CIF Championship … this year is no different!
