Mr. Craig da Luz
Head Baseball Coach

Saints Varsity Baseball is a highly competitive program offering three levels of participation (Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshman).  The varsity teams  have won 21 League Titles, 11 Lion’s Tournament Championships, 9 Bill Whittaker Classic Tournament Championships, 3 City Conference Tournament Championships, and have been to the C.I.F. Championship game 5 times.  The tradition is rich in Saints Baseball and the program will continue to produce fundamentally sound baseball players who continue their playing careers at the next level.

Head coach Craig da Luz has been at the helm of the program for the past 14 years.  da Luz was appointed the head coach in 2009.  Coach da Luz’s teams have averaged 20 wins a season (2009-present: 265-158-4) and captured league titles in 2021, 2013, 2012, and 2011 and 2nd place finishes in 2018, 2015, 2014, 2010 and 2009. In 2014 Coach da Luz was selected as the Diamond Sports American Baseball Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year and a finalist for the National Coach of the Year.  In 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, & 2022 the Saints Varsity team was awarded an ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award with team GPA’s of 3.85, 3.87, 3.65, 3.72, 3.58, 3.50, & 3.54 respectively.  The 2022 season saw a mix of a young and experienced players continue the building process.  Although we graduated 5 starting seniors from the 2022 squad we will be returning 5 starters as well.  The team finished 2nd in the Western League, won their 9th Saints Bill Whittaker Tournament Championship in 11 years, as well as finishing tied for first in the SD Lions Open Division Tournament Pool play and finished the tournament with a 3-1 record.  The Saints were invited to the coveted Boras Classic which pitted the top teams in Southern California against each other in a first class Nationally recognized tournament. The Saints held their own finishing 2-2 in the tournament.  The Saints had wins against Foothill and La Mirada and a loss against J. Serra as well as an extra inning loss to Huntington Beach.  The Saints were the 1 seed heading into the SDCIF D-1 playoffs.  Our journey fell short of our goal of a CIF championship but that experience should help pave the way for continued program success.

The 2023 Schedule is highlighted once again by a difficult Western League schedule, as well as tournament play in the 12th Annual Saints Bill Whittaker Classic, the 73rd Annual SD Lions Baseball Tournament, and the always challenging Bill Dickens Grossmont-Metro-City Conferences (GMC) Tournament.  As as program we strive for a high rate of achievement in the classroom and on the field as we head into the 2023 baseball season.

Every year the program goals are to play to the best of our ability, with very high expectations of self and team, play with class and dignity, win a league title and the CIF Championship.
