Massive line, tight ends top charts in CIF San Diego Section

Preseason honors squad for the section also highlighted by four first-teamers from Helix

Note: This is the fifth part of another continuing series in which we will list preseason all-section teams or preseason all-area teams from throughout California. Up Next: CIF Southern Section Long Beach/South Bay.

If you like teams loaded with massive offensive lines with bulky tight ends to go with them, then meet this year’s preseason CIF San Diego Section football team.

The section that gave us back-to-back Cal-Hi Sports Mr. Football State Players of the Year with Tyler Gaffney of Cathedral Catholic (San Diego, Calif.) in 2008 and Dillon Baxter of Mission Bay (San Diego, Calif.) in 2009 doesn’t seem to have a player of the year contender like that for 2011.

But San Diego could have its best group of offensive linemen in a long time. All five first team picks are at least 280 pounds and all five are big-time major college prospects.

Erik Magnusson of La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad, Calif.), who has committed to Michigan, is perhaps the highest rated of the group and is an All-American candidate. The only other of the five who has committed is Mario Yakoo of Steele Canyon (Spring Valley, Calif.) to UCLA.

To go along with the five offensive linemen, San Diego boasts of a spectacular tight end class this season. We sometimes don’t pick a tight end on these all-section teams, but for San Diego we went with two. Taylor McNamara of Westview (San Diego, Calif.) is one of the top ranked tight ends in the nation by ESPNU. Fellow tight end T.D. Gross of Santana (Santee, Calif.) recently committed to Arizona.

The one school to land the most first teamers this preseason is Helix (La Mesa, Calif.). The Highlanders netted four on the first team with two more on the second. They may be the most talented team in the section, but it will be hard for anyone to actually rank them higher than seven-time defending champion Oceanside (Oceanside, Calif.) until the Pirates suffer an on-field loss. Oceanside might have only garnered two first team picks, but is equally talented across the board and has a more proven track record.

Two of the section’s top returning stat leaders are at Christian (El Cajon, Calif.). Elite 11 quarterback Shane Dillon threw for 2,978 yards and 19 touchdowns as a junior. His favorite target, wide receiver Kyle Harris, had 61 catches for 1,174 yards and seven scores.

First team kicker Seamus McMorrow of St. Augustine (San Diego, Calif.) also deserves extra attention. He had seven field goals last season, including one from 58 yards out that puts his name into the Cal-Hi Sports state record book.
