St. Augustine High School is owned and operated by the Order of St. Augustine in the Province of St. Augustine, in California. Five members of the Order of St. Augustine serve as Members of the Corporation.
The High School Placement Test (HSPT) is required for all current eighth-grade students applying for admission to St. Augustine High School as first-time ninth-grade students. Only applicants seeking admission for the 2027–2028 freshman class are required to complete the HSPT.
The HSPT at St. Augustine High School is scheduled for Saturday, January 9, 2027.
Students who complete an application for admission to Saints are automatically registered to take the HSPT on our campus.
We strongly encourage applicants to take the HSPT at St. Augustine High School. Students who test at Saints receive priority consideration for both admission and need-based tuition assistance. In addition, only students who take the HSPT at Saints are eligible to be considered for Saints merit-based scholarships, which are awarded based on HSPT performance.
Students are expected to take the HSPT at their first-choice high school. However, if your family later decides to pursue enrollment at a different school, HSPT scores may be transferred.
To request that HSPT scores be sent from St. Augustine High School to another school, please contact the Admissions Office.
Likewise, if a student tests at another high school—including an out-of-state testing site—the family must contact that school’s admissions office and request that official HSPT scores be sent to St. Augustine High School for consideration.
If a student is unable to attend the scheduled HSPT on January 9, 2027, please contact:

Admissions Assistant

Make-up testing may be available on a limited basis.
The HSPT is an important component of the admissions process, but it is not the sole determining factor for admission. Admissions decisions are based upon a comprehensive review of each applicant.

In addition to assisting with admissions decisions, HSPT results are used to help determine appropriate freshman course placement, including mathematics and English.
Families are encouraged to regularly monitor their admissions checklist by logging into their mySchoolApp account throughout the admissions process.

This assessment helps determine a student’s readiness for placement in Algebra or Geometry coursework. Questions assess pre-algebraic concepts required for a first-year Algebra I course. In late April of early May admitted students will have the option to take the Algebra Proficiency Exam for math acceleration. More information on the APE will be shared at New Family Night and by email in Spring.
Students should arrive on campus no later than 7:30 a.m. for check-in.
Testing is expected to conclude at approximately 11:30 a.m. Please note that this is an estimated dismissal time. Actual testing times may vary depending on testing group size, the reading of directions, and the distribution and collection of testing materials.
Students requesting testing accommodations must submit all required documentation no later than January 5, 2027, along with their admissions application.

A Parent’s Guide to the HSPT published by Scholastic Testing Service (STS) is available to help families understand the exam format and provide testing tips.
The High School Placement Test (HSPT) is an important component of the admissions process, but it is not the sole determining factor for admission.
The Admissions Committee reviews each applicant holistically by considering HSPT results, report cards, teacher recommendations, and other application materials. HSPT data also helps our academic team determine the most appropriate freshman course placement. Years of experience analyzing HSPT results allow us to place students into courses where they will be challenged, supported, and positioned for long-term success.
Yes. HSPT performance is used to determine eligibility for Saints’ merit-based scholarships.
Traditionally, the 10 highest HSPT scorers who test at St. Augustine High School are awarded the Principal’s Scholarship. This scholarship provides a $10,000 annual tuition credit for four years, for a total value of $40,000.
Students are expected to complete testing at approximately 11:30 a.m. Actual dismissal times may vary slightly depending on the testing group and administration of the exam.
Students should be picked up at the main gate on Nutmeg Street following the conclusion of testing.
A make-up HSPT is not currently scheduled. If your student is unable to attend the January 9 testing date, please contact the Admissions Office before the exam to discuss possible make-up testing opportunities or alternative arrangements.
