St. Augustine
High Completes Phase I of Campus Building Project
Students, faculty, and staff set to move in September 4, 2007
San Diego, California—Phase
I of St. Augustine High School’s $16.8 million campus rebuilding
project in North Park has been completed with students, staff, and
faculty set to move in September 4, 2007. The grand opening date
is 84 years to the day after the opening of the all-boys private
high school in 1923.
“The completion of two new buildings and the remodeling of
Vasey Hall will give students and faculty more technology and space
to enhance the learning process,” said Edwin J. Hearn, Jr.,
president of the four-year, 700-student Catholic high school.
“This entire project has been an overwhelming success story
for the school, the Saints Community and the Greater North Park
community,” said James Horne, Saints principal. “From
concept to final plan approvals, the leadership of the Greater North
Park community worked with the school each step to ensure that an
important component of quality education remained in the midcity
area.”
Hearn added, “It is with gratitude and deep appreciation to
our Board of Trustees; Fr. John Keller, O.S.A; our donors; Union
Bank; Mr. Steve South, Ms. Jeanne Schmelzer of Netzel Associates;
Mr. Steve Chipp, Saints executive director of finance and facilities;
Mr. Michael Giffen of B&G Consultants, DPR, our builder, and
Mr. Tony Cutri, our architect, for making our dreams become reality.”
In addition to remodeling Vasey Hall, the school’s original
administrative wing, Phase I of a three-phase master plan included
the construction of two new multi-story educational and student
services center buildings with subterranean parking for 98 vehicles.
A new auxiliary grass athletic field and 40 off-street parking stalls
were added to replace the Sheehan, Sullivan and the modular classroom
structures.
Phase I was designed by San Diego’s Martinez + Cutri Architects.
Vasey Hall was designed by Richard Requa in 1923. Requa, who designed
many of the public buildings in Balboa Park, is considered by many
as an icon of San Diego’s early to mid-20th century architecture.
Separated by a new main patio, the new classroom buildings are:
1. An 18,330 square-foot, two-story structure with 14 classrooms,
including four science labs, at Nutmeg and 32nd Streets.
2. A 21,245 square-foot, three-story building with 13 classrooms,
including a computer lab. Student services offices (first floor),
student counseling, and campus Ministry, and the library (third
floor) will be located in this building.
“The new buildings nearly double the size of the previous
campus,” said Steve Chipp, the school’s executive director
of finance and facilities. “The school is appreciative of
those who made the campus rebuilding possible, especially our Capital
Campaign donors, funding partners, neighbors in the North Park area,
and the city of San Diego.”
Phases II and III are currently in the planning stages with no timeframe
set for construction.
