ST.
Augustine High School
District:
San Diego
Community: North Park
Enrollment: 700
Principal: James Horne
Profile: St. Augustine High School prides itself on priming
students for college. Over the past decade, every graduate at this
all-boys school has qualified to attend a college or university,
Principal James Horne said.
" Our graduation requirements are built around the University
of California’s entrance requirements,” he said. “Last
year specifically, 93 percent of our graduates went on to four-year
universities.”
St. Augustine – a private Catholic high school – attracts
students from all over the county, including Alpine, Oceanside,
Chula Vista and Coronado. About 5 percent of students come from
Tijuana, Horne added, as the school maintains a strong focus on
the Mexican community, weaving Augustine tradition with Latino culture.
St. Augustine strives to build students who think critically and
participate in the challenging world through strong academic, athletic
and arts programs.
“As an all-boys school, sports are an important part of what
we do,” Horne said, noting that half of the student body participates
in California Interscholastic Federation sport. “We like to
try to wrap our values as a Catholic school into our sports programming.”
The staff is planning an intersession program for next January to
allow students to take nontraditional classes, including graphic
design, journalism, sports marketing and kayaking. The school will
partner with community resources to develop the program.
“Research indicates boys and girls do have a distinct difference
regarding learning,” Horne said. “We work hard with
our faculty to tailor our instruction to the distinct manner in
which boys learn.”
Tuition this academic year is $10,250. The school’s tuition-assistance
program provides more than $1 million in tuition aid each year to
families, regardless of their religious preference.
