Coach
Downey has been the head Track and Cross Country coach at Saints
for the past 23 years. As the track Coach, Jerry’s teams
have accumulated 8 League Championships along with the 2006 CIF
Championship--the first in school history. He was named CIF Coach
of the year in 2006. In Cross Country, Coach Downey is the dean
of all county coaches.
Jerry
won his first State High School Championship in Montana in 1968
before heading south to San Diego. His Saints teams have won 8
league titles. His incredible run of CIF Championships began in
1992 and is highlighted by an unprecedented 5 in a row in '96,
'97, '98, '99, and 2000. He added another in 2005 and his teams
have also been the CIF runners-up in '91, '93, and 2003. His teams
have finished 3 times in the top 10 in the state meet.
During
this time there have been numerous state qualifiers and many college
runners who have benefited from Jerry’s program. He has
been named as the CIF coach of the year 4 times and the 2000 California
State Coach of the Year.

1993 graduate and teammate of current Hall of Famers Pete Albers
and Craig da Luz.Javie lettered three times in baseball and was
selected to the all-league team each year.He was selected 2nd
team all-CIF after his junior year and 1st team All-CIF after
his senior year. He was also selected team co-mvp that season.Javie
tossed two no-hitters in his high school career.After leaving
Saints he played one yr at Mesa College and was the teams leading
pitcher before accepting a scholarship to San Jose State University
where he lettered three times.In his senior year Javie was selected
1st Team All- Western Athletic Conference and was named to the
NCAA All-America Team by Baseball America, and by the Baseball
Writers Association.
His 13 wins set a San Jose State school record in1998..He struck
out 114 hitters tht year as well.
He was named the Hot Stove College Pitcher of the Year, and his
career record of 20-8 is 3rd all-time at San Jose State.He was
drafted after his Junior year by the Houston Astros but chose
to return to school and was drafted by the Kansas City Royals
after his senior year.He split his first year between Spokane
and Lansing at the single A level, and played the 99 season in
Charleston compiling a 3-3 record with a 2.79 ERA and 4 saves.He
spent the following season at AA Wichita.He was selected to the
Northern League All-Star game in 2001, but an elbow injury cut
his season and career short.
